Call for Participants: Business or Religious Archives



Whether you neglected the CEO's new initiative, grossly overspent your budget, or overestimated your capabilities, the Newark Business Archives session "Mistakes...I've made a few" provides a forum for presenters and attendees to share cringe-worthy experiences.  Adapted from a recent session at AAM, the session begins with panelists sharing one or more of the biggest mistakes they have made in their professional career and the lessons learned.  In contrast to the session "The Best Idea I Ever Had," we invite you to share your mistakes...after all...we've all made a few.
MARAC is engaging in crowdsourcing to populate the panel for this session.  The panel will consist of 3 presenters who will share their most cringe-worthy experience that can be presented in 10 minutes.  To participate, please email a description of your experience as well as a brief biography to Tammy Hamilton at thamilton@hersheyarchives.org by Friday, December 2nd.  All submissions will be reviewed and potential participants contacted by Friday, December 16th.

MARAC Distinguished Service Award

Do you know a MARAC member who has made a difference in the lives and successes of others? If so, please consider nominating him/her for MARAC's Distinguished Service Award.

This award recognizes members who have made significant contributions to MARAC and to the archival profession.

Significant contributions to MARAC include the following:

  • Service as an officer, caucus representative, committee member or chair, and as a frequent session or workshop instructor

Significant contributions to the archival profession include the following:

  • Service as a member of the board or committee or section of a national or international archival organization
  • Writing books or journal articles in the field
  • Serving as a professor or as a workshop presenter
  • Contributing to a State Historical Records Advisory Board
  • Reviewing applications for granting agencies

Please note that service to MARAC is weighted more heavily than service to the profession as a whole.

To nominate a member, you must submit the following:

  • A nomination form
  • The nominee's resume or curriculum vitae
  • A letter detailing why the nominee should receive the award
  • A second letter of support

The Committee strongly recommends providing multiple letters of support.

Nominations may be sent at any time via email or regular post. The official deadline is January 31, 2017. All nominations must be received by this date.

Fall 2017: Call for Proposals

The Program Committee is now accepting session proposals for the Fall 2017 meeting of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference, which will be held on October 26-28, 2017 in Buffalo, New York.

The theme of this meeting will be "Reinvention and Renewal: Putting the Shine on the Nickel City," and the Program Committee seeks proposals relating to archival reinvention and innovation. Possible topics include:

·         Impact of closures, mergers, and reorganizations on archives and records management programs
·         Reinventing oneself as a manager/supervisor
·         Ensuring collections and services are accessible to people with disabilities
·         American and Canadian perspectives on archival or records management issues
·         New approaches to and new tools for archival work
·         What happens when "hidden" documents and collections come to light




Our host city, Buffalo, New York, is reinventing itself, and the Program Committee also welcomes proposals relating to archives and the rich history of Buffalo and western New York. Possible topics include:

·         The Erie Canal and water-borne transportation
·         Industry and design
·         Documenting immigration—from the colonial era to the present day
·         Native Americans
·         Foodways and food and beverage history
·         Religion
·         Natural and environmental history

These are just a few ideas, and we look forward to seeing your proposals. Whether you have a fully developed proposal or a sliver of an idea, please contact us!

Proposals will be accepted until midnight EST on December 16, 2016.

MARAC Spring 2017 Newark: Call for General Poster Session and Student Papers

Share your work!

The Program Committee for the Spring 2017 MARAC meeting in Newark, NJ is accepting proposals for two unique sessions that showcase current work of the MARAC membership.   Please see the announcements below and note the different deadlines for each session.  This information is also available on the MARAC Newark website at:  https://marac2017newark.wordpress.com/2016/11/09/share-your-work/ 

General Poster Session:
Posters may describe applied or theoretical research that is completed or underway; discuss interesting collections with which individuals or groups have worked; or report on archives and records projects in which MARAC members have participated (e.g., development of finding aids, public outreach, database construction, etc.). Submissions should focus on research or activity conducted within the previous year (2016-2017). Poster dimensions: 32 inches by 40 inches (may read vertically or horizontally).

Notifications regarding accepted submissions will be sent in late March 2017.  Accepted posters will be on display throughout the MARAC Newark meeting, with one special time slot and location devoted to presentation and discussion of the posters.

To submit a poster proposal, please complete the proposal form (https://goo.gl/forms/hCM8PA5cYV2VBQ4O2) no later than March 15, 2017. (Proposals received after this date will not be considered.) Emailed submissions or submissions in any other format will not be accepted.

Note: This call for proposals is open to ANY professional or student who is conducting archival work or research.

Student Paper Session:
Student papers may focus on any topic of interest to the archival profession. This call for papers is open to any student enrolled in a graduate program in the 2016-2017 academic year, although submitted papers may date from the Fall 2015 semester to the present.

Notifications regarding accepted submissions will be sent in late February 2017. A maximum of four student papers will be accepted, and students must be prepared to present their paper in person at the Spring 2017 MARAC meeting.

Call for Submissions: 2016 MARAC Finding Aid Awards


The Finding Aid Award is given yearly to recognize outstanding achievement in the preparation of finding aids by institutions within the MARAC region. Nominated finding aids must have been made available to the public for the first time during 2016.

The top award will receive the designation of the Fredric M. Miller Finding Aids Award, in honor of Dr. Miller's contributions to the field as archivist and author. Monetary awards will be presented at the Spring 2017 meeting in Newark, New Jersey.

Call for Submissions

In the last decade, there have been significant changes in the processes by which archivists arrange, describe and make their collections available to the public: most notably, the widespread adoption of streamlined processing practices and a push to make our work available online. At the same time, the fundamentals of good finding aids have remained the same: they provide content that enables researchers to understand the materials in our collections and are designed to help them find what they need easily and quickly.

The Finding Aids Committee invites MARAC members to nominate exceptional finding aids for the 2016 MARAC Finding Aid Awards. Successful finding aids will have outstanding content, take full advantage of the design capabilities inherent in their medium of publication, and incorporate successful innovations that enable researchers to more effectively access and use archival materials. Submissions are due by December 31, 2016 and must include:
- A link to the finding aid's URL (or 6 hard copies of the finding aid if only available in print)
- A nomination letter that addresses the finding aids' exceptional qualities and/or discusses elements not readily apparent from examination of the finding aid itself.
